May 2015 Events in Cyprus!

Welcome May, you handsome wonderful month! :)

For us in Cyprus, summer is here! The temperature is slowly stabilizing in the highs and the sun's invitations to the beach are a daily routine. So, as the weather gets better every day, events are popping up everywhere! Enjoy!

It's a crafty world:Temari - The Japanese folk art

By Marlen Parari

Temari was introduced to Japan through China around the 7th century A.D. Temari  (手まり) is the word for 'handball' in Japanese and the craft involves the making of a colorful, embroidered, thread ball. The craft emerged from the desire to entertain and amuse children and nowadays Temari as given as gifts. Temari are highly valued and cherished gifts, symbolizing deep friendship and loyalty.

Historically, Temari were constructed from the remnants of old kimonos where the silk fabric would be wadded up to a form of ball and then wrapped with strips of fabric. As time passed, the functional stitching became more decorative and detailed as it evolved into a form of intricate art.

Traditionally, temari were often given to children from their parents on New Year's Day. Inside the tightly wrapped layers of each ball, the mother would place a small piece of paper with a goodwill wish for her child. The child would never be told what wish his or her mother had made while making the ball.

Alternately, some balls contained "noisemakers" consisting of rice grains or bells to add to the play value. It is said that traditional temari were wrapped so tightly they would bounce.

Learn how to make a simple Temari ball by following the instructions here.

Cooking with the Cyprus team: Oatmeal biscuits [Anzacs]

Recipe by Eleny Roumba from dzinebug

These biscuits / cookies are a big favourite in my family- the kids (& my husband) absolutely love them, so I usually have to double the recipe to keep up with hungry appetites!!! ;)
(Eleny Roumba)

-------------------
Preparation time: 15mins
Cooking time: 15-20mins
Makes: approximately 25 biscuits

Ingredients:
1 cup (100g) rolled oats [I use Quaker oats]
1 cup (150g) plain flour
1 cup (220g) brown sugar
¾ cup (60g) desiccated coconut
150g butter
4 tablespoons golden syrup
2 tablespoons water
1 ½ teaspoons bicarbonate of soda

Method:

1.   Preheat oven to 160ºC / 140 ºC fan oven. Prepare oven trays by lining with baking paper.
2.   In a large bowl add oats, sifted flour, sugar and coconut and combine.
3.   In a small saucepan combine butter, syrup and water and stir over a low heat until melted and smooth. Turn off the heat and stir in the soda – it will foam and rise.
4.   Add the liquid to the dry ingredients and combine. It should be slightly sticky (if you think it’s too dry add a few drops of water)
5.   Roll level tablespoons of mixture into balls; place about 5cm apart on prepared baking trays, flatten slightly with the back of a fork.
6.   Bake for about 18mins until they are golden. Don’t worry if they appear a little soft when you remove from oven. Let them cool on trays & enjoy!
