Έρχεται η Άνοιξη! Ο φετινός παγωμένος Φεβρουάριος μας αφήνει σιγά σιγά και μπαίνουμε στον πιο αμφιλεγόμενο μήνα του χρόνου, τον Μάρτιο. Για να δούμε τι μας επιφυλάσσει! :)

Πες μας λίγα πράγματα για τον εαυτό σου. 

Γεννήθηκα στην Αγία Πετρούπολη, πολιτιστική πρωτεύουσα της Ρωσίας και πιστεύω ότι αυτή η πόλη με την όμορφη της αρχιτεκτονική έχει επηρεάσει πολύ την τέχνη και τη ζωή μου. Εφόσον δεν με δέχτηκαν στο νηπιαγωγείο, η μαμά μου σκέφτηκε να με πάει σε μαθήματα κεραμικών. Έτσι έκανα κεραμικά από την ηλικία τριών χρονών. Επίσης μου άρεσε πάντα να ζωγραφίζω. 

Σπούδασα Νεοελληνική Φιλολογία στο Κρατικό Πανεπιστήμιο της Πετρούπολης και μετά αποφάσισα να έρθω στην Κύπρο για να κάνω έρευνες πάνω στην κυπριακή διάλεκτο. Στη διάρκεια των μεταπτυχιακών μου και διδακτορικών σπουδών στο Κρατικό Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου αγάπησα αυτό το νησί, και παρόλο που αργότερα ταξίδεψα και έζησα σε άλλες ευρωπαϊκές χώρες για να σπουδάσω τέχνη, γύρισα στο τέλος πίσω στην Κύπρο. 

Μ’άρεσε πολύ που έκανα έρευνα στη διάλεκτο, επειδή ήταν μια διαδικασία πολύ ζωντανή, μια επαφή με τους ανθρώπους στον τόπο. Όμως κάποια στιγμή έφυγα από τον κλάδο της φιλολογίας, επειδή η ανάγκη μου να δημιουργώ ήταν πιο δυνατή. Έτσι σπούδασα κεραμικά στο Παρίσι στο στούντιο της Βαλέρια Πολσινέλλι όπως και στη Λάρνακα στο στούντιο του Βάσσου Δημητρίου. Επίσης τέλειωσα σχεδιασμό μόδας και κοστουμιού στην ιδιωτική σχολή Art Future της Πετρούπολης.

Tell us a bit about yourself.
I was born in St. Petersburg, Russia. I believe that this city with the amazing architecture, the cultural capital of Russia has influenced a lot my art and my life. I was not accepted to a kindergarten, so my mother took me to a ceramic studio from the age of three. Also as a child I always loved drawing. 

I studied Modern Greek Philology at the State University of St. Petersburg and then I went to Cyprus to make research on Cypriot dialect. While doing my Master and PhD studies at the State University of Cyprus I felt in love with the island and even if I travelled later to Europe to study art, I finally came back to settle down in Cyprus. 

I loved to do research on dialect as it’s a very live process, which involves direct contact with people. But I left philology as my desire to create was stronger. I studied ceramics in Paris at Valeria Polsinelli’s studio and in Larnaca at Vassos Demetriou studio. I also studied Fashion and Costume Design at a private school called Art Future in St.Petersburg.

Τι δημιουργείς και ποια τεχνική χρησιμοποιείς; 

Μου αρέσει να δουλεύω με πολλά διαφορετικά υλικά και με διαφορετικές τεχνικές όπως σχέδιο, λαδομπογιές, ζωγραφιές στο μετάξι, καλλιτεχνικά κεραμικά, γυναικεία μοναδικά ρούχα και θεατρικά κοστούμια. 

What do you create and in which technique?
I love to work with different materials and to use different techniques like drawing, oil on canvas, ceramics, silk painting, unique woman dress and theatre costume design. 

Ποια είναι τα θέματα της τέχνης σου;
Τα βασικά θέματα της τέχνης μου που εκφράζονται με άμεσους ή έμμεσους τρόπους είναι η πορεία ενός ανθρώπου και η ζωή μιας γυναίκας. 

Με ελκύει το θέμα της ανάπτυξης ενός ανθρώπου, της ελευθερίας του, της αφύπνισής του. Τα κεραμικά μου αγάλματα και οι γυναίκες στους πίνακες μου σαν να ξυπνούν από ύπνο και ελευθερώνονται. Τα ζώα και τα πουλιά στις ζωγραφιές μου εκφράζουν την θέληση για ελευθερία, για ανάπτυξη, για πτήση στον ουρανό χωρίς περιθώρια. Επίσης αγαπώ τα άλογα και τα ζωγραφίζω από μικρή. Για μένα συμβολίζουν δύναμη, καλοσύνη, ελευθερία, ομορφιά. Τα πούλια πάλι τα συσχετίζω με την ελευθερία και με την κομψότητα. 

Με ενδιαφέρει η ζωή της γυναίκας, ο ρόλος της στην οικογένεια και στην κοινωνία. Πιστεύω ότι μια γυναίκα είναι προστάτρια της οικογένειας της και η καλή νεράιδα. Ένας σημαντικός ρόλος μιας γυναίκας είναι να γίνει μητέρα, να προσέχει την οικογένεια της, εννοώ και την μεταφυσική προστασία που είναι μέσα στις γυναικείες ικανότητες. Η γυναίκα δημιουργεί στο σπίτι… πλέκει και δημιουργεί τον δρόμο για την οικογένεια της, ράβει και φτιάχνει τη ζωή των παιδιών της. Νομίζω ότι δεν είναι καθόλου τυχαία που οι γυναίκες ιστορικώς πάντα ασχολούνταν με δημιουργήματα. 

Ένα άλλο θέμα που θεωρώ σημαντικό είναι ο φυσικός θηλασμός. Είναι κάτι σημαντικό για τη μητέρα και για το παιδί, όσο και για την σωματική τους υγεία, τόσο και για την ψυχολογική τους σχέση και ανάπτυξη. Παλιά δεν υπήρχαν τεχνητές σκόνες και οι γυναίκες τάιζαν για πολλά χρόνια τα παιδιά τους και οι άνθρωποι ήταν πιο υγιείς. Σήμερα είναι δύσκολο να δεις μια μητέρα να θηλάζει στο δρόμο, σε κάποιο χώρο ή ακόμα σε μια φωτογραφία. Τα ΜΜΕ προωθούν άλλες εικόνες γυναίκας. Προσπαθώ να προωθήσω τον φυσικό θηλασμό μέσα από την τέχνη μου ελπίζοντας ότι περισσότερες γυναίκες και άντρες θα μπορέσουν να το αντιληφθούν.

Which are the themes of your work?
The main themes of my work are life and personal development of a human being and a life of a woman. These themes are expressed in my work by both direct and indirect ways. 

I am interested in a personal development, freedom and awakening of a human being. My ceramic busts and women on my paintings look like waking up from a long dream and getting free. My animals and birds express an idea of freedom; they wish to fly in the sky without restrictions. The horse is my favorite animal beginning from my early childhood. For me horses symbolize strength, goodness, freedom and beauty. Birds represent freedom and elegance. 

I am attracted by the life of women, by their role in family and society. I believe that women could protect their family and they could be good enchantresses. One of the most important roles of women is to be mothers, to take care of their family, meaning also metaphysical protection which women could provide by their feminine skills. A woman creates at home and creates her home… she knits and makes a way for her family; she sews and organizes the life of her children. I think that it is not by a chance or accidence at all that women always were involved into creations at home.  

Another theme which concerns me is natural breast feeding. It is very important for women and babies, for their health and for their psychological connection and development. In the old times there was no artificial milk, so babies and women were breast feeding for many years. Today you could rarely see women breast feeding their babies in the street, somewhere in public place or even in a photo. Breast feeding is not much promoted by media. I try to propel natural breast feeding through my art. I hope that more women and men could estimate the importance of this.

Πότε και γιατί άνοιξες το etsy shop σου; 

Άνοιξα το etsy shop μου το 2011. Μ’αρέσει πολύ το etsy. Δεν είναι μόνο ένας βολικός τρόπος να παρουσιάζεις τα δημιουργήματά σου στο διαδίκτυο, αλλά και ένας πολύ φιλικός χώρος, όπου ανταλλάσσεις ιδέες, βρίσκεις φίλους, στηρίζεις και στηρίζεσαι από άλλους.

When and why did you open your etsy shop?
I opened my etsy e-shop in 2011. I like etsy. It’s not only an easy way to present your creations online, but also a place where you find friends, exchange ideas, get and give support.

Ποια είναι τα αγαπημένα σου υλικά;
Ο πυλός είναι σίγουρα το πιο αγαπημένο μου υλικό επειδή είναι τόσο φυσικό, όταν το κρατάς στα χέρια σου δίνει δύναμη. Επίσης άνθρωποι με πολύ άγχος και ψυχολογικά προβλήματα προτείνονται να ασχοληθούν με τον πυλό. Είναι ένα είδος φυσικής θεραπείας. Ο πυλός επίσης έχει φαρμακευτικές ικανότητες. Μια μέρα πήγα να κάνω γλυπτά και είχα γρατσουνιά στο χέρι μου και έτρεχε αίμα. Μετά από λίγη ώρα το αίμα σταμάτησε και η γρατσουνιά εξαφανίστηκε. 

Αγαπώ διάφορου είδους πέννες: λεπτές, χοντρές, διαφορετικών χρωμάτων για να δημιουργώ τα σχέδια μου. Μου αρέσει να ζωγραφίζω στο μετάξι επειδή η μπογιά απλώνεται ωραία τρέχοντας και προχωρώντας συνέχεια και δημιουργεί πολλά εφέ. Για τα φορέματα αγαπώ το φυσικό μετάξι, επειδή είναι ευχάριστο για το σώμα και δημιουργεί και όμορφες γραμμές που μου θυμίζουν τα ρούχα της δεκαετίας του 1920 μιας από τις πιο αγαπημένες μου εποχές.

What are your favorite materials?
Clay is for sure my favorite material. It is so natural. When you hold it in your hands, it gives you strength and harmony. Clay calms people down. Anxious people with psychological problems are recommended to take ceramic classes. It might be a kind of natural therapy for them. Clay has also healing abilities. One day I cut my hand and went to make ceramics. After a little time the blood stopped and the wound healed. 

I also love different kind of pens: thin, thick, colored, black, so I could make different sketches. I like to draw on silk, because the paint starts to spread on the silk creating nice mixtures and there are different ways to stop the paint and to create various effects.

Γιατί κάποιος να αγοράσει κάτι χειροποίητο; 

Επειδή είναι μοναδικό, επειδή φέρνει την ενέργεια του καλλιτέχνη και άμα ταυτίζεσαι και συμπίπτεις με την ενέργεια αυτή, μπορείς να βρεις κάτι που θα σε ευχαριστεί πολύ. Λίγα χειροποίητα δημιουργήματα που έχω στο σπίτι μου, το αλλάζουν εντελώς. Χαίρομαι κάθε φορά που τα κοιτάζω, μου δίνουν μια ζεστασιά, μου χαμογελούν.
 

Why should somebody buy handmade?
Because handmade is unique and brings the energy of the artist, and in case your energy matches with the artist’s energy, you will get a creation that will make you happy. I have few handmade creations at home and they totally change the image of the place. Each time I look at them, they smile to me and make me happy.

Τι σε εμπνέει και από πού παίρνεις ιδέες; 

Με εμπνέουν οι εμπειρίες στη ζωή μου, η καθημερινή μου ανάπτυξη, η φύση, τα όνειρά μου, οι παιδικές μου ζωγραφιές. Κατά τω πλείστον με εμπνέουν οι περασμένες εποχές, επειδή μου φαίνεται ότι έχουν πιο πλούσιο πολιτισμό. Από τις πιο αγαπημένες μου εποχές είναι η δεκαετία '20 με τις μοιραίες της γυναίκες και το πλούσιο Αρτ Ντεκό στυλ. Επίσης αγαπώ πολύ τα κεραμικά της Περσίας του 9-14ου αιώνων. Είναι μια πολύ αναπτυγμένη τέχνη τα μυστικά της οποίας δεν γνωρίζουμε σήμερα. 

Πιστεύω ότι η έμπνευση έρχεται σαν ανάγκη να βρούμε την χαμένη ομορφιά, τον χαμένο παράδεισο. Όπως είπε και ο Αντρέι Ταρκόφσκι, οι καλλιτέχνες υπάρχουν επειδή ο κόσμος δεν είναι τέλειος και με τα δημιουργήματά τους προσπαθούν να βρουν περισσότερη ομορφιά. 

Η σημερινή εποχή κατά εμένα δεν παράγει μεγάλες προσωπικότητες, η παγκοσμιοποίηση μας έχει κάνει όλους απρόσωπους, οι ιδιαιτερότητες των τόπων χάνονται και τα ίδια σενάρια έρχονται σαν προγράμματα σε μυαλά ανθρώπων παγκοσμίως. Σήμερα η τέχνη είναι πιο απλουστευμένη, πιο εμπορική. Φαίνεται ότι η ανθρωπότητα έχει φτάσει σε σημείο που δεν μπορεί να παράγει κάτι καινούργιο. Σύμφωνα με τα λόγια του Ρουστάμ Χαμντάμοβ, οι μελωδίες έχουν τελειώσει όλες την εποχή του Μότσαρτ. Σήμερα μπορούμε να βρούμε μόνο καινούργιους τρόπους να τις παρουσιάσουμε, καινούργια στυλ.
 

What inspires you and where do your ideas come from?
A lot of things do inspire me… my everyday life experiences, my personal development, nature, my dreams, the drawings from my childhood… I get inspiration mostly from the creations of the older times, because I believe that the culture of the past is richer. One of my favorite periods is the 1920s with their femme fatale and rich Art Deco style. I also love the Persian ceramic art of the 9-14th centuries. The secrets of the colors and enamels of these ceramics remain unknown until today. 

I think that inspiration comes to the artists because they are trying to find the lost beauty, the lost paradise. As Andrey Tarkovsky said, our world is not ideal and that is why artists do exist. With their creations they try to find more beauty.  

Our time to my opinion does not produce great personalities, the globalization process has made us all faceless, the diversities of different places disappear and the same scenarios come as programs into the peoples’ brain worldwide. Today the art is more simplified, more industrial. It seems that the humanity has come to a point where there is nothing to create anymore. According to the Rustam Khamdamov’s words, all the melodies have been already written in the Mozart’s time. Today we could only find some new ways to present the melodies.

Πιστεύεις ότι η Κύπρος είναι ιδανικό μέρος για καλλιτέχνες;
Η Κύπρος μου δίνει μια γαλήνη και καταφέρνω να δημιουργώ. Επίσης τελευταίως με τις οικονομικές δυσκολίες στο νησί ο κόσμος έγινε πιο ευγενικός, οι άνθρωποι και ο τόπος ησύχασαν και αναπνέουν πιο βαθιά.

Do you think Cyprus is an ideal place for an artist?
Cyprus is a calm place and I can create here. Also lately with economical difficulties on the island people became more friendly and polite and so the island became a calmer place.

Πες μας κάποια από τα αγαπημένα σου βιβλία, ταινίες, τραγούδια/τραγουδιστές και ιστοσελίδες.  

Σήμερα μ’ενδιαφέρουν παραπάνω κάποιες πληροφορίες ή δημιουργίες που μου μιλάνε για το ποια είμαι και τι κάνω εδώ, πώς λειτουργεί ο κόσμος, τι είναι ο πλανήτης μας, το Σύμπαν κλπ. Είναι καινούργιες πληροφορίες που βρίσκεις σήμερα στο διαδύκτιο. Από τα «παλιά» δημιουργήματα αγαπώ τα έργα του Παζολίνι, Ταρκόβσκι, Κχαμντάμοβ, Μπέργκμαν. Πιστεύω ότι είναι μεγάλοι φιλόσοφοι, πολλές ιδέες τους είναι μπροστά από την εποχή τους και μου δίνουν κάποιες απαντήσεις στις ερωτήσεις μου. Today I am interested in books, films and other sources which could provide information about who I am and what I am doing here, what is this world and our planet etc. It is new information which you could find online today. What inspires me always from the “old” art is cinematography. I love films by Pasolini, Tarkovsky, Khamdamov, Bergman. I believe they are great philosophers and their films have amazing image which reminds me a moving painting.

Πρωτοσυνάντησα την Μαρία και τον Γιώργο στην συνάντηση που διοργανώθηκε από το Cyprus Etsy Street Team κάπου τον Σεπτέμβριο του προηγούμενου έτους με αφορμή το Pop Up Festival της Λευκωσίας. Ένα γλυκύτατο ζευγάρι, γεμάτο όνειρα και ιδέες και μια θετική ενέργεια που θέλεις δεν θέλεις σε παρασέρνει μαζί της! 
I first saw Maria and George at our Cyprus Etsy Street Team meeting that was organised somewhere in September last year for the Nicosia Pop Up Festival. Such a sweet couple, full of dreams and ideas and a positive energy that swept you away whether you wanted to or not! 

Οι δημιουργίες τους από τσιμέντο και παραδοσιακή Κυπριακή δαντέλα είναι σίγουρα κάτι πρωτοπόρο για τα δεδομένα στον τόπο μας. Κι όμως! Δεν διστάζουν να το τολμήσουν, να ονειρευτούν, να κατεβάσουν νέες ιδέες, να προσπαθήσουν. Και να που το όνειρο γίνεται τώρα πραγματικότητα.
Their cement and Cypriot lace creations are definitely innovative for Cypriot standards. And yet they won't hesitate to dream, to have new ideas, to try. And now their dream becomes a reality. 

Μετά από πολλές ώρες δουλειάς, κόπου και μόχθου, το IdeaBar ανοίγει τις πόρτες του και μας προσκαλεί όλους να λάβουμε μέρος στην πρώτη επίσημη εκδήλωση τους, το Σάββατο 7 Φεβρουαρίου από τις 4μμ μέχρι τις 8:30μμ, Χρήστου Σαμαρά 7, στο Λιοπέτρι της επαρχίας Αμμοχώστου.
After hours of hard work, labour and toil, IdeaBar opens its doors and invites everyone to participate in their first official event this Saturday, the 7th of February from 4pm to 8:30pm, at 7, Christou Samara Street at Liopetri, Ammochostos.

Κεντρικός άξονας της παρουσίασης θα είναι το σπίτι και η διακόσμηση. Εκτός από το κατάστημα Infected Bubble παρουσιάζονται ακόμα επτά καλλιτέχνες που ασχολούνται με το σχέδιο, την εσωτερική διακόσμηση και την γραφιστική τέχνη. Να προσθέσουμε ακόμα ότι οι δημιουργίες που θα παρουσιαστούν από όλους σχεδόν τους καλλιτέχνες είναι εμπνευσμένες από την κυπριακή παράδοση, ερμηνευμένες με έναν σύγχρονο, δικό τους τρόπο. 

The main theme of this presentation is homeware and home decor. Besides Infected Bubble, seven more artists will be participating at the event who are into design, interior design and graphics. We should also add at this point that almost all of the work presented this Saturday is inspired by Cypriot Tradition, expressed in their own unique and modern way.
