Το quilling είναι μια παλιά τέχνη η οποία έχει επιστρέψει δυναμικά στη μόδα, χάρη σε πολλούς χειροτέχνες παγκοσμίως. To quilling, η τέχνη διακόσμησης αντικειμένων με το τύλιγμα και κόλλημα στενών λωρίδων χαρτιού σε περίπλοκα σχέδια, υπολογίζεται να ξεκίνησε γύρω στο 105 μ.Χ. όταν εφευρέθηκε το χαρτί στη Κίνα (Quillyoubemine). Είναι μια υπέροχη μορφή τέχνης την οποία έχουν υιοθετήσει scrapbookers, σχεδιαστές καρτών και καλλιτέχνες κοσμημάτων. 

Quilling is an old art form which has made a grand comeback, thanks to many crafters around the world. Quilling, the art of decorating objects by rolling and gluing narrow strips of paper into intricate designs,  is said to date as far back as 105 AD when paper was invented in China (Quillyoubemine). It is a beautiful form of creativity which has now been embraced by scrapbookers, card-makers and jewellery artists alike.

Έχοντας εμπνευστεί κι εγώ, λοιπόν, από τις όμορφες φωτογραφίες δημιουργιών που κυκλοφορούν στο διαδίκτυο, αποφάσισα να εξερευνήσω τον υπέροχο κόσμο του quilling. Σήμερα θα μοιραστώ μαζί σας μερικές χρήσιμες συμβουλές, λύσεις κι εμπνεύσεις, που ελπίζω να βοηθήσουν όλους τους φιλόδοξους quillers ανάμεσά μας!

Having been inspired, therefore, by the pretty pictures of creations circulating on the Internet, I too decided to explore the wonderful world of quilling. Today I will be sharing some useful tips, solutions and inspirations with you, which I hope will be helpful to all the aspiring quillers among us! 

Εργαλεία / Tools

Τα βασικά απαραίτητα εργαλεία είναι  / The basic necessary tools are:

• εργαλείο quilling / a quilling tool 
• στενές λωρίδες από χαρτί / narrow strips of paper 
• κόλλα (γόμα για τους Κύπριους!) / glue
• μπόλικη φαντασία και υπομονή! / plenty of imagination and patience!

Το εργαλείο quilling σας βοηθά να τυλίξετε ομοιόμορφα το χαρτί σε σχήματα. Από προσωπική πείρα, τα εργαλεία με σχισμή, όπως κι αυτό στη φωτογραφία, είναι πιο εύκολα στη χρήση παρά ένα σκέτο εργαλείο σε στυλ βελόνας, επειδή κρατά στη θέση του το χαρτί καθώς τυλίγετε.

A quilling tool helps you evenly roll the paper into shapes. From personal experience, a slotted tool, like the one in the picture, is easier to use than a plain needle tool, as it holds the paper in place while you roll.

Χαρτί για quilling / Quilling paper

Μπορείτε να αγοράσετε έτοιμες λωρίδες χαρτιού (3-10mm συνήθως) ή να κόψετε λωρίδες από χρωματιστά Α4 με χαρτοκόπτη. Μια συμβουλή - μην προσπαθήσετε να κόψετε τις λωρίδες με ψαλίδι. Είναι πολύ κουραστικό και χρονοβόρο! Τα έτοιμα πακέτα αξίζουν το κόπο, ειδικά αν θέλετε το πλάτος όλων των λωρίδων να είναι ομοιόμορφο. Επιλέξτε λεπτό χαρτί για αρχή, π.χ. το ποιο συνηθισμένο που χρησιμοποιούμε στον εκτυπωτή το οποίο είναι 60-80 gsm – είναι και πιο εύκολο για εξάσκηση! Για μεγάλα projects, όπως μεγάλες κάρτες ευχών ή κοσμήματα, μπορείτε να χρησιμοποιήσετε μέχρι και 160 gsm. Πιο χοντρά χαρτόνια από αυτό συνήθως είναι δύσκολα να τυλιχθούν με ακρίβεια.

Αν η δημιουργία σας θα κολληθεί σε φόντο, προτιμήστε να τη κολλήσετε σε χοντρό χαρτονάκι διότι κρατάει καλύτερα.

You can buy readymade strips of paper (usually 3-10mm) or cut strips of A4 coloured paper with a guillotine. A tip - don't attempt to cut strips using scissors. This is too tiresome and time-consuming! Ready packets are worth it, especially if you would like the width of all the strips to be uniform. Select thin paper for a start, e.g. the most common type of printing paper which is 60-80 gsm  – this is also easier to practise with! For large projects, such as greeting cards and jewellery, you can use up to 160 gsm. Thicknesses beyond this tend to be difficult to roll accurately.

If you will stick your creation onto a background, it is best to stick it onto thick card as this holds better.

Κόλλα / Glue

Όσον αφορά την κόλλα, εγώ χρησιμοποίησα Mod Podge Matte, αλλά οποιαδήποτε κόλλα για χαρτί κάνει. Προσέξτε μόνο να μη μουτζουρώσει γύρω από το τυλιγμένο χαρτί. Για το καλύτερο αποτέλεσμα, απλώστε το με ένα λεπτό πινέλο. 

As for glue, I used Mod Podge Matte, but any paper glue will do. Just be careful not to let it smudge around the sides of the quilled paper. For best results apply it with a thin brush.
